The flagship hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, located in the University District of West Philadelphia. It is consistently rated as one of the top hospitals in the United States, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine was established in 1874 and is currently the oldest university teaching hospital in the United States.

2016-2017 U.S. News & World Report ranked HUP and Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center among the top nine best hospitals in the nation. In the same report, U.S. News ranked the hospital as the number one hospital in the Philadelphia area.
