Cedars-Sinai Smit Heart Institute focuses on biomedical research and medical education. The medical research center covers cardiology, valve disease, arrhythmia and hypertension, genetics, gene therapy, heart transplantation, stem cell therapy, biomedical imaging. More than 800 research projects are underway (led by 230 principal investigators).

As of 2017, U.S. News & World Report's Cedars-Sinai Hospital in the western U.S. ranks fourth, and its heart center performs more heart transplants each year than any other medical center in the world, with 95 performed in 2012 Heart transplants, 87 heart transplants were performed in 2011.
