Cedars-Sinai Smit Heart Institute focuses on biomedical research and medical education. The medical research center covers cardiovascular disorders and hypertension, genetics, gene therapy, heart transplantation, stem cell therapy, biomedical imaging. More than 800 research projects are underway (led by 230 principal investigators).

As of 2017, U.S. News & World Report ranked Cedars-Sinai Hospital in fourth place in the western United States, with more heart centers per year than any other medical center in the world, performing 95 heart transplants in 2012, and performing 95 heart transplants in 2011 87 heart transplants were performed.
